Getting Started...
Our first weeks in Math will be spent sorting and classifying objects by attributes, working on position and location of objects, and early counting. You can help at home by having your child help you sort things like laundry, groceries, and toys. Ask them to tell how the items are the same or different. Challenge them to look for "odd things" that are the same about two items. For example, "These two socks both have white thread at the toe even though they are different colors." Or "Both of these cereals have a 'K" at the top but they are different."
Thinking and learning in Math...
Also in the first few weeks of school, we will be learning to write our numbers. Here are some short poems to help your child remember how to make the numerals 0 to 9.
Calendar MathEvery day we will work together on calendar math. This will include such concepts as counting by ones, fives, and tens, number recognition, patterning, tallying, graphing and other math skills and concepts. Each student will have his or her own Calendar Binder to mimic the daily calendar activity. This binder will serve as an ongoing record of your child's skill development in math.
